What is Sustainable Development?
For something to be sustainable it must be able to continue indefinitely without reducing the resources on which it depends.
To develop there has to be a year-on-year improvement of the circumstances of a given situation/organisation.
Sustainable Development at Moor Park.
At Moor Park, development is an on-going aim as it must be in any school with integrity and ambition. However, to achieve that development in a sustainable way is a challenge. Life on Earth is an energy demanding process. Virtually all our activities make demands on some form of energy or other. It is a fact of life at home and at work. Energy uses up the resources of the planet and, at the same time, it costs us money, as we all know only too well. In the past our drive for progress has made huge demands on global energy resources and we have given it little thought, thinking them to be from a bottomless pit! We are now aware that first, the pit is not bottomless and secondly, that the relentless consumption of fossil fuels has been damaging the planet in the form of excess emissions of CO2.
Our aim in pursuing sustainable development at Moor Park is not to eliminate energy consumption, in reality an impossible dream, but to reduce it as much as we can and, importantly, make the whole school as sustainable as possible. In practical terms this means not compromising our development as a school whilst, at the same time, reducing our overall dependence on fossil fuels as much as we can.
